James Arena “Stars of 21st Century Dance Pop and EDM” Excerpt Series Part 2: Xenia Ghali

Aside from being one of today’s few prominent female DJs (playing parties, clubs and festivals from Athens to Miami), Xenia Ghali’s ability to deftly produce and remix an electronic dance track to pulsating perfection became crystal clear with her Billboard number one club track, the 2016 smash “Under These Lights.”

James Arena: We are living in age where the risk of an act of terrorism at an event or in a club is increasingly real. Do you see this social development impacting nightlife and dance music?

Xenia Ghali: “It’s a very scary time right now—it’s global, not just one country or one region—this whole terrorism/racism phenomenon. So for my generation, I guess we’ve been thrown into it. I think we’ve been exposed to it more than past generations. For me, it’s something that I not only despise—I find it heartbreaking. I was actually talking to a friend from Greece the other day, and I told her I don’t know where you can consider yourself to be safe anymore. It used to be, as a performer, if you were reluctant to be in Europe, you could go to the States. You can’t go anywhere because [violence] is possible everywhere.”
