James Arena “Stars of 21st Century Dance Pop and EDM” Excerpt Series Part 4: Paul Oakenfold

It’s extremely difficult to summarize the magnitude of Paul Oakenfold’s career and influence upon dance music. He is considered a true icon and pioneer of DJ culture. Following early work as a promoter in the ’80s for the Beastie Boys and Salt’N’Pepa, the three-time Grammy nominee and former DJ Mag World #1 DJ has been leaving an indelible impact on dance floors since the ’90s. The Brit is credited with being one of the leading ambassadors of international dance music trends, and his work has earned him residencies at trend setting clubs such as Ibiza’s Amnesia, Liverpool’s Cream and London’s Ministry of Sound.

James Arena: What percentage of your job as a producer, remixer and creator of dance music is to be an innovator vs. a follower (giving people what they expect and want to hear in current trends)? How challenging is it to maintain this balance?

Paul Oakenfold: “I would say it’s all about being an innovator. Why would I want to be a follower? You have to have confidence and belief in your music, otherwise you are wasting your time. I’ve always worked tirelessly to improve myself, and that improvement doesn’t come from following, but rather innovating.”
