James Arena “Stars of 21st Century Dance Pop and EDM” Excerpt Series Part 1: Dave Audé

Producer and remixer Dave Audé has reached the top of the Billboard dance chart well over a dozen times, and in 2016 he earned a Grammy for his remix of the megahit “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars.

James Arena: Take a song like Adele’s “Hello” or Lady Gaga’s “Til It Happens To You.” How do you approach material like that [for a remix] when it’s not so obviously compatible with a dance floor?

Dave Audé: “Adele’s song was just huge, so you could almost—almost—do no wrong because it is so popular. You’d really have to do a crappy remix to mess that one up. In regard to Lady Gaga’s song, the message was pretty heavy. It is probably the heaviest message of any song I’ve ever worked on—I’m gonna say it was the heaviest. I kind of initially thought, man, is this something people will want to dance to? It’s sort of the same way I don’t dwell on whether the artist is going to like my work or not, I kind of just try to let it flow. Whatever comes out, comes out.”
